Swift Column by habi-sabi

Swifts sometimes nest in old Woodpecker nest holes
in old trees. We have mimicked those nest places with snug,
weather-proof wood-lined nesting chambers, mounted within a tree-like
column. There's a special place included for bats too!
|
Low
Profile Revolutionary new Swift & Bat Nest Column looks like a mobile phone
mast, provides high-quality accommodation for Swifts and Bats in urban
environments
Inspired by tree-nesting Swifts in Scotland and Lapland, Swift
Conservation devised this new structure providing nestplaces within
urban sites.
On the left you can see an architect's vision of two of the Columns set
up at the 2012 Olympics site at Stratford, East London. The idea is
that they will blend in well with the existing installations of metal
columns mounting lights, CCTV, solar arrays, radio antennae and more.
Funded by the RSPB, designers 51 architects and habi-sabi turned the idea into reality,
with the column manufactured by Hutchinson, a major mobile phone mast manufacturer,
and fitted out with plywood lined nest places for 8 breeding pairs of
Swifts, and beneath them oakwood chambers for small bats
too.
Already installed at two major UK sites, Woking Council Offices and the
University of Birmingham, the habi-sabi Swift & Bat Column is an
easy to procure, easy to
install, easy to manage design that offers plenty for urban
biodiversity projects.

These nest boxes are essentially a moulded plastic box that is faced with brick and inserted
into a wall. During manufacture slips of matching brick are bonded to the
front plate, enabling the box to blend in with the host wall.
The model on the left is designed specifically for Swifts. Other box designs
are available, housing small to medium sized birds (including Alpine
Swift for European users) and most of the UK’s bat species.
The
Bird Brick House fits into the outside skin of most 75mm brickwork
courses and only protrudes 25mm (Swift box or 65mm) into the cavity. At
the bottom there are two drainage holes that allow moisture to drain
into the wall cavity.

Nest Box CCTV Systems from
"Spy Camera CCTV"
Most “off-the-shelf” cameras for night
viewing emit infrared in a frequency that Swifts can see. N.B. If you
can see red light from the emitters so can the Swifts. This visible
spectrum alters behavior – even to the point of chasing them out of
nestplaces. The key is to use IR lights that emit at 940nm.
